Electrical Safety Habits for Your Metairie Home
Everyday electrical safety is mostly about noticing changes, using equipment as intended, and addressing small concerns before they become part of the routine.
Give cords and plugs a quick look
Stop using equipment with frayed cords, damaged plugs, or exposed conductors. Keep cords away from rugs, doorways, and furniture that can pinch them. An extension cord should not become permanent wiring for a room.
Use appliances according to their instructions. A power strip creates more plug positions but does not increase the electrical capacity available.
Keep electricity and water separate
Use equipment suited to its environment, including appropriate outdoor ratings. Do not handle electrical equipment while standing in water, and have water-damaged installations evaluated before reuse.
Ground-fault protection serves an important purpose but does not make all contact with electricity safe. Follow the device’s testing instructions and arrange service if a protective device will not operate properly.
Respond to warning signs
- Repeated circuit trips.
- Burning odor or discoloration.
- Unusual buzzing or heat.
- Loose or damaged receptacles.
- A shock or tingling sensation from equipment.
Stop using the affected equipment and request an evaluation. For smoke, fire, or immediate danger, move away and call emergency services.
Maintain the alarms
Follow the manufacturer’s testing and replacement instructions for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. USFA recommends monthly smoke alarm testing. Replacement timing and battery care depend on the alarm type; do not assume one schedule applies to every device.
Keep a home escape plan and make sure household members know what to do when an alarm sounds. Never disable an alarm to solve a nuisance alert.
Review the setup when life changes
A new appliance, home office, or renovated room can change electrical needs. Discuss the equipment requirements before using adapters or adding extension cords to make it work.
Keep access to electrical equipment clear and save the documentation from completed work. If children or pets can reach cords and outlets, review those areas as the household changes.
Our electrical services can help address fixed wiring, outlet, panel, and lighting concerns.
