Why Do My Lights Flicker? A Guide for Metairie Homeowners
A flickering lamp and lights changing brightness throughout the house can point to very different problems. The pattern matters more than how annoying the flicker feels.
Is it one light or several?
If a single lamp or fixture flickers, the bulb, socket, fixture, or dimmer may be involved. LED bulbs and dimmers need to be compatible; a bulb labeled “dimmable” is not a promise that it will work well with every control.
For an accessible lamp with no damage or other warning signs, turn it off and let it cool before checking the bulb manufacturer’s recommendations. Do not reach into a socket or work on a wired fixture. If a compatible replacement bulb does not solve the problem, arrange an evaluation.
Does it happen when an appliance starts?
A brief change when a large appliance starts can relate to the additional demand. Repeated, pronounced, or newly developing changes are worth investigating. An electrician can determine whether the issue involves a connection, circuit loading, equipment, or the incoming supply.
A larger breaker is not a shortcut. Breakers must match the wiring and equipment they protect. Similarly, a panel’s age or amperage alone does not establish why lights are flickering. If testing identifies a problem in the panel, review our electrical panel repair options to understand the next step.
When several rooms are affected
Lights that become unusually bright in some rooms and dim in others can indicate a serious supply or connection problem. Contact an electrician and your utility for guidance rather than waiting for the pattern to settle. Do not open the meter enclosure or electrical panel.
- Record which rooms are affected and the approximate time.
- Note whether the change follows appliance use or bad weather.
- Describe any accompanying sounds, odors, or power interruptions.
- Keep away from damaged or wet electrical equipment.
Repair the cause, not just the symptom
Replacing bulbs repeatedly can hide the fact that the underlying problem remains. A useful service visit starts with your observations, then uses appropriate testing to locate the cause. The recommendation might involve a fixture, control, circuit repair, or additional coordination with the utility.
If flickering comes with smoke or fire, leave the area and call emergency services. For urgent electrical symptoms without an immediate fire emergency, our emergency electrical service can help you determine the next step.
